Details

The Owon XDM1041 is an extremely low-cost, high-precision benchtop multimeter. The meter has a True RMS function to measure the AC voltage and current and it has a reading speed of up to 65 values per second.

The XDM1041 can store data internally in the memory of the meter and display it on the 3.5" high-resolution LCD. Up to 1000 points can be stored and the time interval can be varied from 15ms to 9999s. Using the USB port on the back of the device, the meter can be programmed and controlled via SCPI.

PROS: It takes about the same workspace of a handheld multimeter. It is cheap and quite accurate. Good for everyday measurements. With same small software fixes it could be perfect.

CONs: 1.Every time you power it up, it returns to it's default options. It does not allow to save your measurement options (like fast speed measurement). 2. 220v input should be at the side, not at the back & a right angle adaptor should be included. I am using a right angle power adaptor. Most users will place it as further back as possible to their bench. But, at its back you need 6-7cm for the power cable, this is problematic.

Finally, a not expensive bench multimeter, that stays on, doesn't even have auto power-off and doesn't beep every five minutes to remind the user to turn it off!

Overall: Bang / Buck ratio is excellent! The xdm1041 is a capable bench DMM at a price approaching that of handhelds.

Precision: I can't tell, as I don't have acces to any standards. Long term / temperature drift: I have no idea. Apparently it's possible to calibrate each range in each mode separately if needed.

Pros:
55000 counts (obviously), even finer resolution in scpi.
display is bright and clear
small form factor (see below) - fits everywhere
math functions
dual function display (see below)
scpi interface (see below)

Cons:
small form factor (see above) - must hold the device to press buttons
Temperature measurement unusable
K-Type probe: within 30mins, the measured temperature offsets by 4-5 deg celsious
Pt100: Errors due to calble resistance at decent to low temps
Pt1000: Not supported
Recorded measurements can't be downloaded to the computer
No firmware updates provided
no sigrok support

Weaknesses:
user interface is confusing, too many buttons w/r functionality
E.g. Run/Stop: Useless,
E.g.: range: Range button should be labeled "Range auto / man";
can't change range while in math mode)
E.g. Dual button (see above) useless: Why not display these rare "dual" information anyways?
Pointless/redundant information on the display
scpi implementation barely documented, not compliant.

Wishlist (in addition to the points already mentiond)
inductance measurement
graphical display of recorded data
log / copy recorded data to usb stick
4 wire measurement (for me, it's not the price but the size why I didn't get the 2041)

Others have mentioned (but I don't care):
it takes a couple of seconds to boot
only CAT I/II rated
doesn't run on batteries (IMO, that's what handhelds are for - see also -> xdm1241)

Let's say it clearly: bench multimeters at this price point are a fanciful idea.

But this one falls short but NOT by much of being very very good for how inexpensive it is. The downsides are the very slow pace it has during measurements, mostly because auto-ranging is slow and not the measurement itself... some measurements are not the most accurate, for example capacitance and K-type thermo-couples.

Overall a good companion, with a bit of whining noise with the screen past 50% of brightness. Power cord pretty hard, probes of modest quality, could benefit from an upgrade that nevertheless might add another 25-30 EUR to the cost.

I liked the product as the scree is very pleasant and always on... it changed my work life compared to the hend-held unit.

Translated: "The accuracy of the measurements is very good. But the user interface has some problems. It is very slow taking measurements, even if you set it to "fast" measurement mode. When you press the start button, there is no immediate reaction, you don't know if you have turned it on or not. The best thing: the accuracy. The worst thing: the slowness of the measurements."
