The Guide MobIR ES1 is a plug-and-play thermal camera for smartphones and tablets, turning a phone into a thermal imager for HVAC inspection, electrical fault diagnosis, PCBA inspection and building inspection. It connects through USB-C and works with both Android and iOS, so the same camera can be shared across devices. The ES1 has no battery of its own as it draws just 310mW from the phone.
The thermal camera has a NETD of ≤15mK, showing far smaller temperature differences than most smartphone thermal cameras. The 120x90 detector can be upscaled in real time to 480x360, giving four times the linear resolution, and the camera is ready to measure about 5 seconds after plugging in. Moreover, the 50°x38° field of view and a minimum object distance of 0.1m suit close-range work on cabinets, boards and pipework.
The free FocusIR app for iOS and Android provides spot, line and area analysis, 12 colour palettes plus one custom palette, temperature alarms, and photo and video recording. The measurement range of the ES1 runs from -20 to 550°C over two auto-switching ranges. The aerospace-grade metal housing is IP54 rated and passes a 2m drop test, while the whole camera only weighs 25g.
For close-up inspection of small components, an optional magnetic 30x macro lens is available. iPhone 14 and earlier models, and iPads with a Lightning port, require the optional USB-C to Lightning adapter.
