Details

The GPT-12000 series Hi-pot testers from GW Instek are budget Hi-pot testers. The GPT-12001 is able to perform AC withstanding test. This Hi-pot tester is a good choice due to its many features and a maximum test voltage of 5 kV. Additionally, the GPT-12000 contains a sweep and tabular automatic test as well as a statistics function. The GPT-12000 series has a test capacity of 200VA and a capacitive load testing capability up to 47 μF.

The testers are designed for ease of use, the high resolution LCD display clearly shows which settings have been chosen, and whether the test object meets the set requirements. The devices meet the test requirements of IEC, EN, UL, CSA, GB, JIS and others. Furthermore, these Hi-pot testers comply with IEC 61010-2-034.

The GPT-12000 can be connected to a computer via an USB host port, RS-232C and optionally GPIB in order to be able to store data.

When working with high voltages such as 5 kV, it is important that no safety problems occur. The testers are designed to minimize the change of this happening, so when the test is completed or a dangerous situation occurs they switch off the voltage.

The testers offer the possibility to save 100 default settings. Of these, 16 can be performed automatically at the touch of a button.

Tests

Hi-pot (DC/AC withstanding)
Aim: To prevent users of a product from receiving an electrical shock, for example due to a failure of the electrical insulation.
Method: By measuring the amount of current leaking between the high voltage part and the "safe" low voltage part while using the product in high-voltage mode, one can measure whether dangerous situations may occur.

Insulation test
Aim: To test the quality of the insulation
Method: Alike to the Hi-pot test, measure how much current is leaking from the high-voltage part to the low-voltage part of the circuit.

Ground Bond
Aim: To test if any switching conductive parts and their ground are well connected.
Method: Check if there is an electric path between conductive metals and the ground of the power supply. The quality of the path is checked

Arc detection
Aim: To expose potential problems such as loose screws or poor insulation.
Method: Measure the duration of the current peak that is caused when a drastic change in the supply voltage occurs. This is usually done during a Hi-pot measurement.
