The APS-1102A by GW Instek is a programmable AC/DC supply with a 1 kVA output-power at 200 V. The supply can deliver AC/DC or a combination of both. The supply can be used to supply arbitrary waveforms, like a function generator would. To do this the power supply can store 16 waveforms of up to 4kpts.
The supply offers 3 output modes, it can generate arbitrary waveforms, amplify a source signal or synchronize the generated signal with an external source.
Apart from that the supply can measure a lot of values. It can measure voltage, current, power and frequencies. These values can be displayed on the screen and stored on a computer, connected via USB or RS232.
Two unique functions make this power supply different from other supplies. For one it can measure the peak-power that follows from turning on a connected circuit. For example, a capacitive rectifier can demand a high startup current. The supply can deliver up to 4 times its current to test this effect.
The other useful function is that the supply can measure the harmonic currents generated by the connected circuit. Harmonic currents are bad for hardware as it can cause power fluctuations, possibly disabling the connected circuit. The APS-1102A can measure and display these currents up to the 40th harmonic.
