A barlow lens is mounted on the objective of the microscope.
This 2x barlow lens doubles the magnification of the microscope and halves the working distance (from the objective to the plateau). A 7x - 45x microscope has the specifications of a 14x - 90x microscope, using the 2X barlow lens.
